Archival Photographs

I have been collecting older photos of the Chester area for many years. Some of the better quality images are presented here. Many of the photographs were in very bad condition and until recently there wasn't a lot that could be done to save them. Fortunately with the advances and affordability of digital imaging, a great number of them can be restored to an acceptable level and can be enjoyed once again.

Although all of these photos underwent some degree of retouching, such as removal of dust and mold spots and in extreme cases repairing cracks and tears, I don't like to retouch them to the point of ruining the charm that they have acquired by simply ageing.

A great number of our photographs are not being cared for or stored properly and are in a constant process of deterioration. I hope by digitizing some of these images they will be around to be appreciated for many years to come.

I didn't attempt to put a date to the images as it is definitely not my field of expertise. I welcome you to contact me with suggestions as to the approximate date of any of these photos.

Reproductions of the images are available in sizes from 5 X 7 inches to over 4 feet. The quality of the original of course, determines the maximum acceptable size. If you are interested in acquiring a photo or having one of your own restored and/or enlarged please contact me.

There are two types of photos:

1. Regular Format - These photos are taken using normal perspective and have conventional proportions.
2. Panorama - Photos that are taken with a panoramic camera and/or have a very wide field of view. Due to their width, these are difficult to display on a computer monitor, but if you scroll left to right you can get a feel for this special format.

There are a couple of ways to navigate the photos:

1. Use the Text Index to get a brief description of each photo and click on the link to view the image.
2. Browse the Thumbnail Pages which provide a small versions of the photo that link a larger view. Links from the Thumbnail Pages open the photo in a new window in your browser - just close the new window when you are done viewing the photo and the Thumbnails will still be there to choose another view from.

Either way links are provided throughout to get you around.

Enjoy.
